- In 2023, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) reported that around 60 percent of motor vehicles across the country have expired registration.
A total of 20,089 motor vehicles with expired registration were apprehended in intensified operations across the country in July this year, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) disclosed on Wednesday, Aug. 6.
LTO chief, Assistant Secretary Vigor D. Mendoza II said most of those apprehended were motorcycles with 12,672 violators and tricycles with 3,712 apprehensions.
A total of 1,800 vans were also apprehended while 887 private sedans were also apprehended. A total of 646 trucks and 253 sports utility vehicles were also apprehended while the rest are passenger jeepneys and buses.
“This is not only about the obligation to have your vehicles registered, this is also an issue of road worthiness because registration is one of the best ways to check if the motor vehicles are still okay,” said Mendoza.
Based on the LTO data, most of the apprehended motor vehicles are from Calabarzon (Cavite, laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon), Cagayan Valley Region, and Mimaropa (Occidental and Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan).
Mendoza warned delinquent motor vehicles of hefty fines once they are caught driving the unregistered cars—P10,000.
And aside from the fine, Mendoza said motor vehicles apprehended must pass the roadworthiness inspection before they are released to the owners.
Mendoza also urged the public to report unregistered motor vehicles to LTO in order to compel owners to renew the registration.
