Gas leak in Ayala Alabang traced to generator set

Authorities have identified the source of the gas leak that happened in the posh Ayala Alabang Village in Muntinlupa on Aug. 5. 

Mayor Ruffy Biazon said authorities have traced it to a generator set inside the Alabang Country Club in the village and not from a gas station. 

The mayor said “the leak was traced to an old pipeline connected to the club’s generator set. The pipeline is now due for replacement.”

This was based on the initial investigation conducted by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB-NCR), Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA), Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Office (EPNRO), Lake Management Office (LMO), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP Muntinlupa), Muntinlupa City Department of Disaster Resilience and Management, and Barangay Ayala Alabang's safety personnel.

One resident posted that the fumes from the gas leak were so strong that the De La Salle Santiago Zobel School inside the village was closed on Aug. 5. 

“I spoke with personnel on-site, and they confirmed that the valve of the generator set has been shut off and fuel siphoning is now underway. While the leak was initially suspected to have come from a nearby gas station, authorities have since ruled this out. Further analysis is ongoing to ensure full clarity,” Biazon posted on Facebook. 

He said drainage canals were opened and inspected as the leak had already entered the system. 

The Alabang Country Club has agreed to drain its pool as part of the cleanup efforts. 

Authorities requested the original as-built drainage plan from 1978 to determine how the generator set pipeline connects to the drainage system, the mayor added. 

The fire station collected water samples to identify the specific type of fuel product that leaked. 

EPNRO and LMO are conducting continuous monitoring from Ayala Alabang to San Jose to ensure the leak does not spread further. 

The Muntinlupa City government is in close coordination with national government agencies to protect the safety of the environment, residents of the village and surrounding communities, added Biazon.
