Fifty-five Filipino math aces competed against over 3,000 of their counterparts from 19 countries at the Asia International Mathematical Olympiad (AIMO) held in Tokyo, Japan.
The Philippine team, composed of public and private primary and high school students from across the country, bagged 3 gold, 5 silver, and 21 bronze medals plus 26 merit citations in the event, held from August 2 to 6 at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.
Aside from the Philippines, teams from the following nations also took part in the AIMO: China, Taiwan, Russia, Bulgaria, Canada, Turkey, Hong Kong, Macau, Vietnam, Thailand, Brazil, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Uganda.
The AIMO was founded in Hong Kong in 2012 by the AIMO Union, an international charitable organization which aims, among others, to "provide teenagers a platform to explore their math potentials, broaden their math horizon, improve their scientific thinking and engage in cultural exchange and friendships."
Dr. Simon Chua, head of the Mathematics Trainers' Guild Phils. (MTG) which mentors the Filipino contingent, named the team's gold medalists as Adrian Jeric Ang (Xavier School San Juan), Cyris Chad Manarang (Zamboanga Chong Hua High School) and Denise Phoebe Chua (Chiang Kai Shek College).

Ang also secured second runner-up honors for garnering the third highest gold grade in his grade level.
The team's silver medalists are Thea Pauleen Garcia (Colegio San Agustin Binan), Cyrus Carl Manarang (Zamboanga Chong Hua High School), Johann Paulo Campos (Philippine
Science High School- Main Campus), Keylla Reign Reyes (Grace Christian College) and Anika Gayle Tan (DLSU High School).
The bronze medal winners are Enzo Sebastian Yeung (Chiang Kai Shek College), Irish Tom Tolentino III (Colegio San Agustin Binan), Rudy Aldrin Turingan (Holy Spirit Academy of Malolos), Lara Jane Natividad (Phil.
