Valenzuela launches city-wide cleanup drive to address flooding
The Valenzuela City government has activated an inter-department task force to carry out cleanup operations following days of heavy rains that left at least 80% of the city flooded.
Mayor Wes Gatchalian on Tuesday, August 5, announced the formation of Task Force Kalinisan, composed of city personnel, barangay officials, volunteers, and private sector partners.
The task force will lead “Operation Linis Ganda,” which involves the desilting of drainages, canals, and waterways to help prevent further flooding.
Aside from flood control measures, the task force will also implement beautification efforts, including grass cutting, tree trimming, clearing of tangled wires, repainting of walls, and repair of public facilities.
Gatchalian said the initiative is part of the local government’s intensified efforts to address the city’s recurring flooding problem.
“While we are doing this regular cleanup, we are still studying and planning for a longer-term solution to the floods,” Mayor Gatchalian said.
He added that while short-term cleanup operations are ongoing, the city is also planning permanent flood mitigation projects. These include the construction of nine additional pumping stations, a water catchment basin along McArthur Highway, and the development of a new Urban Planning Drainage Master Plan.
The mayor also urged property owners, businesses, and residents to support the campaign by cleaning their surroundings and practicing proper waste management.
