The San Juan Knights warded off the Zamboanga SiKat’s challenge in the second half before prevailing 80-69, while the Abra Weavers crushed the Manila Batang Quiapo, 117-63.
The victories improved San Juan Abra’s win-loss records to 20-1 to move one win ahead of Nueva Ecija (19-1) in the 30-team tournament.
Michael Calisaan and Orlan Wamar stepped up for San Juan, which seized a 36-33 lead at the break and never looked back.
Calisaan paced the Knights with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Wamar chipped in 13 points, 10 assists and 10 boards. AC Soberano and Kenneth Villapando also provided support with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Carl Bryan Cruz and Ichie Altamirano had 14 and 13 points for Zamboanga, which dropped to 15-7.
Meanwhile, Dave Ildefonso exploded for 25 points, six rebounds and five steals for Abra, with support coming from John Uduba and Jolo Mendoza, who combined for 22 points, 22 rebounds and six assists.
Manila fell to 2-18 despite Alfred Sedillo and Decoy Lopez scoring 20 and 15 points, respectively.
Meanwhile, also-ran Bacolod stunned Basilan Starhorse, 76-73, for its third win against 18 losses.
Basilan briefly held the lead, 72-71, following back-to-back triples from Lorenzo Navarro, but the Tubo Slashers answered back courtesy of Aldave Canoy, Mart James Barrera and Mark Ray Dubouzet to give the Portmasters their 10th loss in 20 outings.
