CEBU CITY – Ensure that the road is clear.
Authorities issued this reminder to drivers of ambulances after a motorcycle was hit by a speeding ambulance in Barangay Kamagayan here past midnight on Tuesday, Aug. 5.
Andrew Abesia was injured in the incident, which happened on the intersection of P. Del Rosario and Junquera Sts. at around 1:40 a.m.
Police said Abesia was driving a motorcycle on Junquera St. and tried to cross the intersection as the traffic light was green.
Even if the traffic light on P. Del Rosario St. was red, the driver of the ambulance, Israel Jerusalem, 34, did not slow down that caused him to hit the crossing motorcycle.
The ambulance was carrying a patient to the Perpetual Succour Hospital here.
Abesia was brought to a hospital after the incident while the ambulance driver was taken into custody by the Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) of the Cebu City Police Office.
The TEU reminded that while motorists are required to give way to ambulances, drivers of these emergency vehicles must also observe traffic signs and ensure that intersections are clear before crossing.
