The House of Representatives has named the first seven solons in its 12-member contingent to the powerful Committee on Appointments (CA) in the current 20th Congress.
The seven were Pangasinan 5th district Rep. Ramon Guico Jr., Butuan lone district Rep. Jose "Joboy" Aquino II, Isabela 1st district Rep. Antonio "Tonypet" Albano, Cavite 2nd district Rep. Lani Mercado-Revilla, Camiguin lone district Rep. Jurdin Jesus Romualdo, Laguna 4th district Rep. Benjamin Agarao Jr., and Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Alfredo Garbin Jr.
Majority Leader Ilocos Norte 1st district Rep. Sandro Marcos made the motion to elect the seven as members of the CA during plenary session Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 5.
Marcos mentioned that Guico will serve as the head of the House contingent.
The presiding officer, Deputy Speaker Lanao del Sur 2nd district Rep. Yasser Alonto Balindong carried Marcos' motion after hearing no objections from the plenary.
Under the 1987 Constitution, the 25-member CA is mandated to assess the competence, integrity, and fitness of key presidential appointees, with the authority to either confirm or reject them.
The bicameral body does so during confirmation hearings, with the concerned presidential appointees in attendance.
The CA comprises 12 members each from the House of Representatives and the Senate, with the Senate President serving as the 25th member and ex-officio presiding officer.
