Former president, Pampanga 2nd district Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has been designated a committee chairmanship in the nascent 20th Congress.
During plenary session Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 5, the House elected Macapagal-Arroyo as chairperson of the Committee on Poverty Alleviation.
Majority Leader Ilocos Norte 1st district Rep. Sandro Marcos made the motion to elect Macapagal-Arroyo, along with other House members and their respective designations.
The presiding officer, Deputy Speaker Lanao del Sur 2nd district Rep. Yasser Alonto Balindong carried Marcos' motion after hearing no objections from the plenary.
The Committee on Poverty Alleviation in the House of Representatives covers all matters directly and principally relating to policies and programs to address the poverty situation in the country and other actions to alleviate the plight of the poor and promote their right to equal access to opportunities for a better quality of life.
The panel was chaired in the previous 19th Congress by former 1-Pacman Party-list Rep. Mikee Arroyo.
Macapagal-Arroyo, 78, a senior member of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) party, served as Philippine president from 2001 to 2010. She was also House Speaker during the latter part of 17th Congress.
The Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps)--the government’s flagship poverty alleviation initiative--came into fruition during her term as president.
