Canine unit clarifies viral photo of underweight police dog in Manila
The Regional Explosive and Canine Unit - NCR (RECU-NCR) has released a public statement addressing a viral photo showing one of its police dogs appearing to be underweight.
EDD KOBE is a trained Explosive Detection Dog (EDD) assigned to the District EOD and Canine Unit (DECU-MPD).
The agency clarified that the dog, named EDD KOBE, is healthy and had just completed intensive training, which explains his slim appearance.
EDD KOBE is a trained Explosive Detection Dog (EDD) assigned to the District EOD and Canine Unit - Manila Police District (DECU-MPD).
According to RECU-NCR, the photo was taken shortly after the dog completed a 15-day refresher training course held from May 26 to June 13.
The training aims to enhance the dogs’ skills in detecting explosive materials and ensure they remain reliable in the field.
The agency explained that Belgian Malinois, the breed of EDD KOBE, naturally have lean build and often appear slimmer after rigorous training.
Despite his appearance, RECU-NCR assures the public that EDD KOBE is physically fit and capable of performing his duties.
The unit also emphasized that all K9s under its care receive proper nutrition and regular check-ups from licensed veterinarians.
In response to comments about the dog’s handler, RECU-NCR explained that Patrolman Victor Paulo Dy Buco, EDD KOBE’s assigned handler, is a certified Person with Disability (PWD).
He sustained injuries in a motorcycle accident in 2022, including a pelvic fracture and left hand injuries, and has since undergone surgery.
His physical condition limits his movement, which has contributed to his current weight.
Despite this, Patrolman Dy Buco continues to serve with dedication and remains an active member of the K9 unit.
RECU-NCR reaffirmed its commitment to the health and welfare of its service dogs, emphasizing that they are essential partners in law enforcement and public safety.
