The 2025 GWM Cannon is a lifestyle product for those seeking a balance of utility and comfort in a premium package, and at a reasonable price. While the Cannon is off-road capable, we try out its abilities on paved roads to see how it fares in typical situations pickups face in the Philippines.
I recently joined Great Wall Motor Philippines for a track day to experience firsthand what the 2025 GWM Cannon has to offer. Held at R33 Drift Track in San Simon, Pampanga, the event aimed to showcase the pickup’s drivability in real-world conditions, including urban roads and open highways.
As GWM Marketing Director, Dax Avenido, described it, the Cannon is a lifestyle product for those seeking a balance of utility and comfort in a premium package.
Two versions were available at the event: the SLUX 4x4 AT and the LUX 4x4 AT. Both share the same dimensions and are equipped with a generous cargo bed that makes them suitable for work or leisure. Whether hauling gear or heading to a job site, the Cannon appears ready. Inside, it leans more toward SUV-like comfort than utilitarian truck simplicity.
The track exercises included high-speed turns, acceleration and braking tests, lock-to-lock U-turns, hard braking while turning in wet conditions, parking with the help of a 540-degree camera system, and a demonstration of the adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and low-speed follow functions. These tests highlighted how the Cannon handles daily driving demands with confidence. It was refreshing to see such technology applied to a three-ton truck, showcasing its on-road strengths rather than focusing solely on off-road capability.
Under the hood, the Cannon is powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine with a Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT), producing 184 PS at 3,600 rpm and 480 Nm of torque from 1,500 to 2,500 rpm. This is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and an electronic gear lever. The torque-on-demand all-wheel drive system adjusted smoothly throughout the exercises, and Sport mode, one of three selectable drive modes, provided quicker throttle response. The engine also supports a 3,180 kg towing capacity and a payload limit of 1,050 kg.
The SLUX variant stood out with features such as a retractable stepboard, ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, a 540-degree camera system, an electronic rear differential lock, and a complete suite of Level 2 driver aids. These include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and traffic jam assist. It also comes ready for accessories, with a rear cargo box lock and wiring provisions. The LUX variant, while slightly more basic, still includes LED automatic headlights with streaming turn signals, leatherette seats, a 12.3-inch floating infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and key safety equipment.
On track, the Cannon felt composed and responsive. Steering feedback was precise, aided by electric power steering with adjustable modes. A double wishbone front suspension and leaf spring rigid rear axle provided a good balance between ride comfort and load-bearing capacity. Ventilated disc brakes with brake force distribution and assist ensured confident stops. Safety is reinforced by a high-strength frame, anti-collision door beams, emergency fuel cut-off, six airbags, and a 540-degree panoramic camera view.
Inside, the Cannon feels more premium than rugged. A leather-wrapped steering wheel with tilt and telescopic adjustment, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, and automatic climate control with rear air vents enhance everyday usability. The SLUX adds thoughtful extras like a 50W wireless charger with built-in cooling, multiple USB ports, and power-adjustable front seats. Both variants also come with a spray-on bed liner and a hydraulic-assisted tailgate that doubles as a step-up ladder. Design updates include a new center console with an aero-style gear selector, improved trim materials, updated door stitching, and refreshed leather seat patterns. It also benefits from additional sound-absorbing materials to reduce cabin noise during highway drives. A factory harness makes it easier to add electrical accessories.
After spending time behind the wheel, I walked away with a clearer understanding of how much capability GWM has packed into this truck. Driving the Cannon on track made it evident that GWM is serious about competing in the Philippine midsize pickup segment. With a combination of hauling strength, modern technology, and passenger comfort, the Cannon makes a strong case for buyers seeking a versatile vehicle that performs well on the road while remaining ready for more demanding tasks when needed.
