Four decades since donning the red and white jersey, Allan Caidic returned to his alma mater to offer inspiring words to the current crop of the University of the East Red Warriors Men’s Basketball during their Meet-and-Greet on Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Lucio Tan Gymnasium in UE Manila.
Caidic sees the renewed unity between past and present Red Warriors as a strong foundation for a title run, and a clear signal that UE is ready to return to championship form.
“This event is a great kick-off for all of us, for you guys. Seeing the alumni pledging here left and right, this is a good sign for all of us. I hope this is a good sign papunta sa direksyon na gusto natin,” he added.
With the 40-year title drought looming, the three-time UAAP champion pointed out that Season 88 presents the best chance for UE to end its title drought.
“It’s about time to have another one,” he added.
Caidic also recalled that during their time, aspiring players had to go through tryouts to earn a spot on the team as there was no recruitment process in place back then.
“Bakit naging champion ang UE for so many years? Because ang mga players, pumupunta doon. They try out. We didn’t have any recruits that time — magta-try out kami,” he added.
To build excitement for the upcoming season, newly appointed head coach Chris Gavina also introduced the 2025 UE Men’s Basketball Team and coaching staff, which includes former PBA players Alex Cabagnot, KG Canaleta, Paolo Hubalde, and Louie Vigil.
“We are not just building a team, we are rebuilding a legacy,” said Gavina.
The Red Warriors fell short against the Adamson Soaring Falcons in the playoff for the last Final Four spot in the UAAP Season 87, with Jack Santiago serving as head coach at the time.
