Alas Pilipinas fell short of its target of improving its bronze medal finish in the recent 5th SEA V.League Leg 1, but its bevy of talent, especially its core of young stars, has managed to impress the region with its skill and huge potential.
The Nationals thumped Indonesia, 25–20, 25–20, 16–25, 25–13, last Sunday, Aug. 3, to avoid a tournament sweep after losing to perennial podium finishers Thailand and Vietnam earlier on.
Angel Canino continued to grab attention as she was recently named as the first leg's Best Outside Spiker after leading the Nationals to another bronze finish.
“One step closer, more to chase,” the 22-year-old Canino wrote on her Instagram post.
The Bacolod City native just bagged her second international individual award this year – her first was in the AVC Nations Cup last June where she took home one of the Outside Hitters plum. She shared the feat with Vietnam’s Trần Thị Thanh Thúy.
Prior to her third overall accolade on a foreign joust, Canino steered Alas to a monumental silver win in the AVC alongside Best Setter Jia De Guzman, Best Middle Block Dell Palomata, Bella Belen, Eya Laure, and Vanie Gandler, among others.
Wrapping up the first leg with a 1-2 slate, the Jorge de Brito-mentored crew aims to finally notch a win against the powerhouse Thailand and Vietnam in Leg 2 slated Aug. 8 to 10.
According to de Brito, the overseas exposure is part of the Nationals' buildup for the Southeast Asian Games set in Thailand late this year.
