The explosion occurred Sunday afternoon, August 3, at the corner of Dagupan and Tayuman Streets.
All six victims, now confirmed to include a minor and a senior citizen, were reportedly in the vicinity when a salvaged air conditioning compressor allegedly exploded.
Initial findings from the Manila Police District’s Explosives and Ordnance Division (EOD/K9) showed that the group may have attempted to dismantle or strike the pressurized compressor, unaware of the danger it posed.
Authorities continue to point to improper handling of hazardous scrap material as the likely cause of the explosion.
Of the six victims, four remain in critical condition at Tondo General Hospital and Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center.
One of them reportedly lost a hand due to the blast.
According to MDSW Director Jay Dela Fuente, the six victims are being provided with medical and financial assistance.
Investigation into the incident is ongoing. Officials reminded the public to exercise extreme caution when handling or collecting industrial scrap materials, especially those that may still contain pressurized contents.
