No tsunami threat to Philippines after 7.0-magnitude quake off Russia on Aug. 3 — Phivolcs
PHIVOLCS
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said there is no tsunami threat to the country following a magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck off the coast of Russia’s Kuril Islands on Sunday, Aug. 3.
Based on preliminary data, the offshore quake occurred at a depth of 41 kilometers and was recorded at 1:38 p.m. (Philippine time).
In a tsunami bulletin, Phivolcs said “no destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data,” and emphasized that “no action is required” at this time.
Phivolcs explained that tsunamis are a series of sea waves usually caused by undersea earthquakes and can reach heights of over five meters.
The agency also clarified that tsunamis are sometimes mistakenly referred to as tidal waves, and are often confused with storm surges, which are caused by weather disturbances rather than seismic activity.
