As torrential rains brought by the intensified southwest monsoon, or 'habagat', and recent typhoons lashed Metro Manila and parts of Luzon, thousands of families were forced to flee their homes due to severe flash floods and landslides.
In response, Senator Mark Villar promptly mobilized rapid relief operations to aid the heavily affected communities.
“Nakakalungkot at nakakadurog po ng puso makita ang ating mga kababayan na naapektuhan ng patuloy na ulan,” said Villar in a statement, expressing deep sympathy for the victims. He likewise noted that many families had to abandon their homes and belongings amid rising floodwaters.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Senator Villar led distribution efforts to provide food packs containing rice, canned goods, drinking water, and noodles to evacuees and stranded residents. His team reached thousands of Filipinos in key areas including Manila, Las Piñas, and Marikina, as well as nearby provinces such as Rizal, Bulacan, and Laguna.
“Gusto po natin maabutan ng tulong ang maraming apektadong pamilya at Pilipino,” Villar said, emphasizing the need for immediate support during such calamities. He also acknowledged the support of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in facilitating relief operations.
Despite the relentless rains, Villar’s team maintained on-ground presence throughout the week, ensuring continued aid delivery.
He stressed that it is during times of crisis that public service must be most visible.
“Bilang lingkod-bayan, handang-handa po tayo at ang ating opisina para magpaabot ng tulong at suporta sa lahat ng nangangailangan,” Villar stated, adding that his role as a legislator includes pushing for long-term solutions to flooding issues.
He vowed to author and support measures in the 20th Congress that will address the worsening flood conditions in Metro Manila and Luzon.
Senator Villar’s swift action serves as a reminder of the critical role government leaders play during disasters, not only in delivering immediate aid but also in shaping policies for a more resilient future.
