Northern Luzon is expected to experience rains and cloudy skies on Saturday, August 2, as the southwest monsoon or habagat continues to affect the region, while the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) monitors a tropical depression located outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
In its latest weather forecast, PAGASA said the habagat continues to bring rain and thunderstorms to several areas in Northern Luzon, even as a tropical depression remains outside PAR.
As of 3 a.m., the tropical depression was located 1,635 kilometers east northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon. It has maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h near the center and gusts of up to 70 km/h, moving northeastward at 25 km/h.
While the system has yet to enter PAR, PAGASA noted that its presence is enhancing the southwest monsoon.
Affected areas and forecasts
PAGASA said Batanes will experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms, raising the risk of flash floods and landslides due to moderate to at times heavy rainfall.
The Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), and the rest of Cagayan Valley will see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms, also due to the southwest monsoon. Localized severe thunderstorms may result in flooding and landslides.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country are forecast to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers caused by localized thunderstorms, with similar hazards possible during intense downpours.
Public advisory
PAGASA urged residents, particularly in Northern Luzon, to stay alert for possible flooding and landslides, especially in low-lying and mountainous areas.
The public is also advised to monitor updates through official channels and follow any warnings issued by local disaster and emergency authorities.
