Russel Je Ricaforte took the spotlight during the PATAFA weekly relays over the weekend after shattering the long-standing Philippine record in men’s discus throw.
Ricaforte, team captain of the Ateneo track and field team, heaved 54.14 meters to eclipse the 34-year-old mark of 52.10m set by Fidel Repizo at the 1991 Southeast Asian Games that the country hosted.
It was also better than the silver-medal standard of 51.89m at the last Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in 2023.
The Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) confirmed this development.
The Ateneo track and field team also congratulated Ricaforte’s feat.
“A historic milestone for Philippine athletics -- and a proud moment for Ateneo!” the team posted.
