Visayas, Mindanao face yellow alerts due to plant outages, high demand
National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) is placing the Visayas and Mindanao grids on yellow alert due to power plant outages and high system demand.
Effective Friday, Aug. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., the two regions will be put on a yellow alert—an advisory issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the grid’s contingency requirement.
According to NGCP’s report, the available capacity in Visayas is at 2,569 megawatts (MW), while its peak demand is at 2,449 MW.
“A total of 423 MW [is] unavailable to the grid,” it said.
From April to July, NGCP found that 10 plants underwent a forced outage. Six of these have been down since last year, while the capacities of the other four are derating.
Meanwhile, Mindanao has 2,827 MW of available capacity, while its peak demand is at 2,667 MW.
Overall, Mindanao has 638.3-MW worth of lost capacity in its grid.
“Eleven plants have been on forced outage from June to July, and two other power plants have been out since 2024; three are running on derated capacities,” NGCP added.
The grid corporation assured that the Luzon grid is still operating in normal condition.
The Department of Energy (DOE) has yet to validate the report and the actual status in the two regions, according to Energy Undersecretary Mario Marasigan.
