PAOCC warns public vs. online love scams: 'Oversharing can make you a target'

The Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) has warned the public against oversharing personal information online, saying it can make them vulnerable to online love scams.

During the monthly “Balitaan Forum” of the Manila City Hall Reporters’ Association (MACHRA) held at the Harbor View Restaurant in Manila on Wednesday, July 30, PAOCC Executive Director Secretary Gilbert Cruz said scammers often target individuals who post about their relationship status or openly seek romance online.
He said people who post statuses like “It’s complicated” or indicate that they’re seeking romance are often singled out by love scammers.
He urged the public to be cautious, to be vigilant and to look out for red flags, such as when someone who seems “too pretty,” or “too handsome,” and “too good to be true.”
They also use stolen photos and fake identities to gain their victims’ trust.
“These scammers usually use pictures or identities that are not really theirs and pretend to venture into the same interests based on the posts of their prospective victims, purpose of enticing them to establish relationships with them,” he said.
He added that scammers rely on psychological tactics and profiling methods to spot easy targets.
According to PAOCC data, retirees, pensioners, and social media users aged 35 and older are among the most common victims of love scams.
