Friday, Aug. 1 may have come and gone for a lot of Filipinos without even remembering the late former president Corazon "Cory" Aquino.
But not Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Party-list Rep. Leila de Lima.
"Maraming salamat, Tita Cory, sa tapat na paglilingkod, pagtindig laban sa diktadurya at sa pamanang demokrasya (Thank you very much, Tita Cory, for your faithful service, your stand against dictatorship, and your legacy of democracy)," De Lima wrote on her Facebook.
Aug. 1 was the 16th death anniversary of Aquino, the country’s first female president.
"Nagkakaisa po nating ituloy ang laban ng People Power–gobyernong may totoong pananagutan at nagmumula ang kapangyarihan sa taumbayan (Together, we carry forward the fight of People Power—for a government of genuine accountability, where power truly comes from the people)," added the former senator and Department of Justice (DOJ) secretary.
De Lima's post also shared a quote from the democracy icon.
Aquino took over Malacañang in 1986, right after President Marcos' late father, president Ferdinand Marcos Sr., was ousted during the peaceful EDSA People Power revolution.
She was the mother of the late former president Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III and wife of the late senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Sr.
