A long-delayed northbound interchange along the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) in San Pedro City, Laguna opened to motorists on Friday, Aug. 1, following years of construction carried out by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Citing persistent demand from residents and daily commuters, DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan said the newly completed ramps now provide direct northbound access to and from San Pedro, addressing longstanding clamor from motorists who previously relied solely on a southbound exit.
Before the interchange became operational, northbound travelers from San Pedro were forced to take the congested Manila South Road toward Susana Heights in Muntinlupa or drive southbound to Southwoods Interchange in Biñan City before re-entering SLEX heading north.
Motorists approaching from the southbound direction also had limited access to San Pedro, often exiting at Susana Heights and doubling back via local roads or through an expressway re-entry which results in inefficient and time-consuming commutes.
The P915-million project, implemented by DPWH Regional Office IV-A and the Laguna 2nd District Engineering Office, was funded under a multi-year program that began in 2018.
“This project stands as a clear example of what we can achieve when we work together—government, private sector, and communities united under a shared goal,” Bonoan said.
“It reflects our broader commitment under the Build Better More Infrastructure Agenda of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., toward building a more connected, more resilient, and more inclusive Bagong Pilipinas,” he added.
Among those who joined the inauguration were Transportation Secretary Vivencio Dizon, Toll Regulatory Board Executive Director Jose Arturo M. Tugade, and Laguna 1st District Representative Ma. Rene Ann Lourdes G. Matibag and Laguna Governor Sol Aragones.
Also in attendance were DPWH Undersecretary Eugenio R. Pipo Jr., Assistant Secretary Loreta C. Malaluan, Regional Director Jovel G. Mendoza, and Assistant Regional Director Henry Alcantara.
