Catantan cleared from injury, eyes return in September

Paris Olympian Sam Catantan is all set for a big return after fully recovering from a surgery that repaired her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury last year.
The 23-year-old Olympic fencer shared her current condition on an Instagram story Friday, Aug. 1, saying her left knee is fully healed and is expected to compete this September.
“Officially cleared to return to the sport and compete by September,” Catantan wrote.
It was a timely development for the Philippine fencing team, especially for Catantan who is gunning for a redemption bid in the upcoming 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand this December.
This, after the Quezon City Sports Enhancing Program (QC SEP) alumna came up short in the 32nd edition held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia after twisting her left knee in her semifinal win over Singapore’s Kemei Cheung, 15-6.
She eventually withdrew from the finale of the women’s foil event and paved the way for Singaporean Maxine Wong’s victory.
Aside from her SEAG hopes, Catantan is also seeking her second appearance in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
Last August, the former University of the East star made a historic stint in the French capital as she broke a 32-year drought of Filipino fencers in the Games.
