CAVITE – The city government of Bacoor and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) commemorated the 127th anniversary of the Bacoor Assembly at the historic Cuenca House on Friday, August 1.
Sen. Loren Legarda served as the guest of honor, leading the flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies.

Also present were Cavite 2nd District Rep. Lani Mercado Revilla, Mayor Strike B. Revilla, Vice Mayor Rowena Bautista Mendiola, NHCP Chair Regalado Trota Jose Jr., National Commission for Culture and the Arts Chairman Victorino Mapa Manalo, and other local officials.
Legarda’s great-grandfather, Ariston Gella, was among the members of the Malolos Congress that ratified the Philippine declaration of independence.
“Sa panahon ngayon, na lahat na lang ay nasa social media, at siyempre, in a globalized world, baka matabunan ang ating kasaysayan (In today’s time, when everything is on social media, and of course, in a globalized world, our history may risk being overshadowed),” Legarda said during her speech streamed live through Facebook.

“Kaya mahalaga itong ating mga ginagawa na mga selebrasyon (That is why celebrations like this is important)… This is really putting priority on who we are as a people.”
Actor John Arcilla, meanwhile, performed a dramatic reading of the Acta de Independencia, a document declaring the Philippines' independence from Spanish colonial rule.

Republic Act No. 12073, also known as the Bacoor Assembly of 1898 Act, officially declares August 1 as “Araw ng Paglalathala at Pagtatanyag ng Kasarinlan ng Pilipinas” or Promulgation of the Solemn Declaration of Philippine Independence.
