- Senator Erwin Tulfo urged e-wallet companies and social media platforms to proactively remove online gambling links as a matter of social responsibility, warning that the growing crisis is destroying lives.
Senator Erwin Tulfo on Thursday, July 31, made a call to e-wallet corporations to initiate the removal of online gambling links on their platforms as a form of social responsibility.
Senator-elect Erwin Tulfo (PPAB)
Tulfo, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Games and Amusement, made the call ahead of the upcoming hearings on the bills seeking a total ban on the industry.
“Huwag na sanang antayin ng mga kumpanya na ito na sabihan pa sila, gagawa ng batas (These companies shouldn't wait to be told or for a law to be made). Isipin nyo na lang (Just think about it), you guys have social responsibilities, and we are facing a crisis. Online gambling problem is a crisis,” Tulfo said in an interview over ABS-CBN News Channel.
“Kung ‘yung negosyo natin, nakakasakit na sa kapwa, then siguro we have to reinvent… Now, gusto natin makita yung sinasabing yung corporate responsibility--social responsibility. Ipakita nyo nga sa amin, eh malalaking kumpanya kayo, di ba? (If our business is already harming others, then maybe we have to reinvent... Now, we want to see what's called corporate responsibility—social responsibility. Show it to us; you're big companies, aren't you?)” the senator added.
According to Tulfo, the leading financial technology companies like GCash and PayMaya, among others, will be invited to committee hearings along with related government agencies and various stakeholders.
“Common sense yun. 'Yung morality na, where do you stand? Ito, maraming buhay ang nasisira. Malalaking kumpanya listed sa stock exchange. Eh ganoon naman pala eh. Nabuhay kayo dati sa mga kumpanya na ‘yun na wala pang online gambling (Here, many lives are being ruined. These are big companies listed on the stock exchange. So that’s how it is then. You used to thrive even before those companies had online gambling),” he stressed.
Social media platforms will also be asked to send representatives, as Tulfo also questions the online gambling advertisements on the internet applications.
The neophyte senator reiterated his call for a total ban on online gambling, saying the “social ills outweigh the benefits.”
“Dati, narinig lang natin, pinang-to-tong its ang 4Ps. Eh nakakatakot ngayon baka yung 4Ps ngayon na mga pera, napupunta lang dyan sa online gambling (Before, we only used to hear that the 4Ps money was being used for tong-its. But now it’s alarming—what if the 4Ps money today is just going to online gambling),” he warned.
