ILOILO CITY – Five Ilonggo lawmakers have secured key positions in the 20th Congress.
Reps. Janette Loreto-Garin of Iloilo first district and Ferjenel “Ferj” Biron of Iloilo fourth district were elected deputy speakers of the House of Representatives.
“I am humbled and honored to be entrusted with the role of deputy speaker. I will remain committed to pushing for legislation that builds a better future for every Filipino,” Garin said.
“As I step into the role of deputy speaker, I carry with me the hopes of those I serve and the responsibility to lead with courage, compassion and vision,” Biron said.
Garin and Biron are doctors by profession.
She served as Health Secretary during the remaining years of President Benigno S. Aquino III’s administration.
Rep. Lorenz “Noy” Defensor of Iloilo third district was elected senior deputy majority leader.
Rep. Julienne “Jam-Jam” Baronda of the lone district of Iloilo City is among the deputy majority leaders.
Defensor and Baronda were nominated by House Majority Leader Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro” Marcos.
During the opening of the 20th Congress last Monday, Defensor, acting floor leader, nominated Marcos as house majority leader.
Rep. James “Jojo” Ang Jr. of Uswag Ilonggo party-list was elected as an assistant majority leader.
