Drunk man shot, arrested after trying to shoot cops in Antipolo
A drunk man causing a public disturbance was shot and subsequently arrested after he allegedly pointed an improvised firearm (sumpak) at responding police officers who were trying to pacify him in Antipolo, Rizal, on Wednesday, July 30.
The Antipolo Component City Police Station (CCPS) identified the suspect as “Arle,” who was arrested for Alarm & Scandal, Attempted Homicide, and Violation of Republic Act 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act).
Authorities said that at around 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, a Barangay Public Safety Officer (BPSO), along with Pat. Evan Borela and Pat. John Morris Morante, responded to a report of an alleged alarm and scandal at Grava Falls, Carolina Village, Sitio Leyva 2, Barangay Sta. Cruz, Antipolo City.
Upon arrival at the scene, the responders observed the suspect, who appeared to be intoxicated and armed with a sumpak while causing public disturbance through scandalous acts.
As the police officers approached Arle to pacify him, he allegedly pointed his sumpak at them, prompting Borela to fire his service firearm at the suspect, hitting him in the lower body.
“When the suspect aimed the improvised firearm directly at him, the officer had only seconds to decide. With no other choice, he discharged his service firearm, striking the suspect once in the lower part to disable him and stop the threat,” authorities said.
The improvised firearm, which was loaded with one .38 caliber bullet, was secured by the arresting officers.
The suspect was immediately brought to the Rizal Provincial Hospital System-Annex 1 for treatment.
Based on Barangay records, authorities said the suspect is a known and notorious figure allegedly involved in multiple incidents of theft and robbery in the area.
The Antipolo CCPS is conducting an investigation into the incident, while documents and evidence are being prepared for the filing of appropriate charges against the suspect.
