Alas Pilipinas faces a stern test when it battles regional powerhouse and host Thailand on the opening day of the 2025 Southeast Asia (SEA) Women’s V.League Leg 1 in Nakhon Ratchasima Friday, Aug. 1.
Almost four weeks since their last international stint that ended in a fourth-place finish in VTV Cup, the world No. 47 Filipinas strut their wares against the No. 20 and SEA Games perennial champion Thailand at 5 p.m.
This would mark the start of the two-leg event that will eventually move to Ninh Bình, Vietnam on Aug. 8 to 10 for its second part.
Leading the pack is seasoned setter Jia De Guzman who is ready to provide the playmaking to Alas hitters Bella Belen, Alyssa Solomon, Angel Canino, Shai Nitura and Cla Loresco.
Backing up De Guzman is Mars Alba, and suiting up as the liberos are national team mainstay Dawn Catindig and Justine Nazareno. Eya Laure, Vanie Gandler, Fifi Sharma, Maddie Madayag, Thea Gagate, Leila Cruz, and Dell Palomata are also up to support the Jorge de Brito-mentored team.
The last time Alas Pilipinas won over a Thai squad was earlier this month in the VTV Cup, beating Est Cola (Thai U21) in straight sets. But things would be different this time as the Nationals clash with the talent-laden senior squad.
Thai elite hitters Chatchu-on Moksri, Ajcharaporn Kongyot, and Pimpichaya Kokram, who are armed with overseas experience, are expected to give the Philippines a hard time.
