Jonidel Mendoza’s “Shadow Between the Lines” is like walking into a whispered conversation with the subconscious. Jonidel, a Venezuelan artist, transformed the space into a realm where the unseen is just as potent as the seen.
MEET THE ARTIST Jonidel Mendoza
His pieces “Self-silhouette” and “Echo of What We Are There in What We See” immediately set a poetic and introspective tone, like meditative lines in a poem.
Jonidel’s fascination with the human figure, faceless and undefined, is immediately apparent in the exhibit. These enigmatic forms are both distant and intimately familiar. The interplay of light and shadows, central to his technique, creates ambiguity that compels you to lean in, to take a closer look, to observe, and to project your own narratives onto the canvas and installations. His work will invite you to fill in the gaps with personal memories, perceptions, and emotional landscapes - an interactive experience without a single button to press.
The visual narrative is dominated by silhouettes, unfinished faces, and fragmented forms, challenging the viewer to discern what is explicitly presented versus what is suggested. Jonidel’s brilliance lies in his ability to turn absence into presence, making what is withheld as significant as what is revealed. This concept is beautifully articulated in pieces like “Face to Face Between the Lines,” where the viewer is encouraged to confront the elusive nature of identity itself.
Another striking aspect of the exhibit is Jonidel’s audacious incorporation of unconventional materials. Organza silk, metal mesh, and even voltage wires, typically cold and utilitarian, are imagined through layered painting techniques and immersive installations. This creates a compelling tension, a delicate dance between fragility and resilience, the organic and the industrial.
In the sculptural installations, particularly “Interceptions of Reflection,” the desire to physically interact with the artwork is almost irresistible. You find yourself wanting to move around them, allowing your eyes to wander and discover the multidimensional layers of aesthetic and social meaning embedded within. It’s here that the existential questions of one’s own being and purpose emerge, making the encounter deeply personal.
“Shadows Between the Lines” is a space for contemplation. For Jonidel, identity and memory are not fixed, but fluid, continuously shaped by what we remember, what we forget, and what we choose to reconstruct. His works encourage a confrontation within the fragmented, shifting nature of the self, leaving the viewer with a sense of introspection long after they’ve left the gallery.
Exhibit runs until Sept. 6 at Gallery Deumila, 210 Loring Street, Pasay City.
