When Gen. Nicolas Torre III assumed the top police post, his advice to the public was not to look for cops in the police station and instead dial 911 for a police response within five minutes.
But for a 20-year old college student who was walking on his way home in Binondo in Manila on Monday night, that was impossible since the very gadget that he could use to contact the police was forcibly taken by two armed motorcycle-riding robbers.
Fortunately, a patrol team from the Tactical Motorcycle Reaction Unit (TMRU) passed by, resulting in the arrest of one of the two suspected robbers in a follow-up operation based on the information relayed by the victim.
This is the reason, according to National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Maj. Gen. Anthony A. Aberin why they have to deploy as many policemen on the ground especially during the late night to early morning period.
“The case highlights the strengthened street-level presence and rapid deployment capability of the NCRPO under its intensified anti-criminality drive,” said Aberin.
In the case of the victim, Aberin said the robbery incident occurred at around 11:30 p.m. and the victim had no way to immediately contact the policemen for assistance when the robbery occurred along Muelle Dela Industria Street near Juan Luna Street.
The motorcycle-riding cops then sped off towards the escape route of the robbers and resulted in a brief gun battle when one of the robbers opened fire at the pursuing policemen.
Aberin said his men fired back which hit one of the suspects on the leg. He was later abandoned by his companion and arrested later. Seized from him was a .38 revolver.
The arrested suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment of the bulletwound while a follow-up operation is being conducted against his companion who fled with the cellular phone and a sling bag containing P3,500 cash of the victim.
He now faces cases of violation of Republic Act 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act), in addition to charges of Robbery with Violence and Intimidation under the Revised Penal Code.
“This operation stands as a clear display of NCRPO’s commitment to delivering swift and responsive police service and reinforces the trust and safety the public deserves in the streets of Metro Manila,” said Aberin.
