'We shall stand tall': VP Sara thanks defense team, supporters after SC impeachment ruling

Vice President Sara Duterte broke her silence for the first time since the Supreme Court (SC) declared as unconstitutional the impeachment complaint against her.

In a statement on Wednesday, July 30, the official extended her “heartfelt gratitude” to her 16-member defense team “for taking on my case, even when no one else was willing to stand by me.”

“Thank you to the Petitioners of G.R. No. 278359 for having the conviction to challenge the abuses of the House of Representatives,” she said, referring to the petition’s docket number.

“To those whose voices rang out in dissent against persecution — thank you. Your courage to speak the truth has been a source of strength,” she added.

Duterte, who is now back in the country after visiting her father in The Hague and attending a rally in South Korea, also thanked the “parents, children, and silent supporters” who prayed for justice.

“Your quiet faith lifts me up,” she said. “Our country deserves better, and we shall stand tall, strong, and resilient against leaders whose greed will bring down our homeland. We deserve better.”

The Supreme Court earlier declared as unconstitutional the impeachment complaint against Duterte, citing the one-year bar rule in the Constitution.

The House of Representatives, however, said they will file a Motion for Reconsideration.

Duterte’s lawyers, represented by Atty. Michael Poa, assured in recent interviews that the camp of the Vice President is ready to face the challenges to the SC decision, as well as any future impeachment complaints against her.

The Vice President also said in past interviews that she will answer the allegations in the impeachment complaint, including the fictitious names who allegedly received confidential funds from her office.

A recent survey showed that 80 percent of the respondents want her to face the impeachment complaint.
