  • Senator Erwin Tulfo condemned the viral incident of a congressman watching online sabong during session, calling it shameful and urging the lawmaker to apologize or explain, while stressing that government officials are paid to work, not gamble.
If there's anything that the viral "sabong" watcher should do, it's to come out and apologize.

This was according to Senator Erwin Tulfo, a former member of the House of Representatives, who said that he was very frustrated when he saw the viral photo on social media.
During the plenary session Monday, July 28, an alleged male House member spotted watching online sabong or cockfighting on his phone. News cameras took his picture from behind, with his phone screen in full view.
"We were on a break kahapon sa lounge nung pinakita sa akin ng mga senador. Kilala mo ba ito? Sabi ko hindi ka mamukhaan. Pero come on, nandoon ka sa Congress. It doesn't matter kung boring yung botohan ng speaker, mag-antay ka," he said in a media briefing on Wednesday, July 30.
(We were on a break yesterday at the lounge when some senators showed me the photo. They asked, 'Do you know this person?' I said I couldn’t recognize you. But come on, you were in Congress. It doesn’t matter if the voting for Speaker was boring—you should’ve waited).
"Trabaho mo yan. There's a time kung sugarol ka, which is bawal, sinabi na bawal pag government official ka mag-sugal, kung talagang hindi mo matiis yung kati, hintayin mo na lang," he added.
(That’s your job. There’s a time for everything—even if you’re a gambler, which is prohibited, since it’s already been declared that government officials are not allowed to gamble. If you really can’t resist the itch, at least wait until your work is done).
He even stated that if the lawmaker can't help it, he should just wait and finish his job whether in Congress or in government, because they are being paid by the people to work, and not to gamble.
"Nakakahiya naman. You pay us thousands and thousands and mag-susugal lang...bad example, sinabi na nga ng gobyerno bawal ang sugal. Bawal ka mag-sugal. Ba't ka nag-susugal? (It’s shameful—you pay us thousands and thousands, and yet we gamble...that sets a bad example, especially when the government has already said gambling is prohibited. If it’s banned, why are you gambling?)" he said.
Tulfo is hopeful that Congress will do something about it since it's embarrassing. He added that this is the effect of online gambling on people, who do it everywhere, even in public spaces.
"Well, siguro mag-apologize siya or then he has to explain...Tapos the Congress should ask for an explanation (Well, maybe he should apologize—or at the very least, he has to explain himself...and then Congress should demand that explanation)," he said.
