Majority Leader Ilocos Norte 1st district Rep. Sandro Marcos stood his ground when asked about how the House of Representatives will handle Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment case moving forward.
Here's the scene: Rep. Marcos is walking with his colleagues toward the House plenary hall to hear President Marcos' fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA]. The 31-year-old is literally just a couple of hours removed from being elected as majority leader, one of the more crucial posts in the chamber.
Reporters tug a him at every direction for a quick interview. He then gets asked about Vice President Duterte's impeachment case, which the Supreme Court (SC) had just ruled as unconstitutional.
"I think the House stand is quite apparent," Rep. Marcos coolly said.
"The statement has been made that while we respect the SC decision, we will have the right to appeal through a motion for reconsideration (MR). But I think as far as that issue is concerned, that's all we have to say about now," he added.
As the principal respondent in the impeachment case, the House will file an MR before the SC, said the chamber's spokesperson, lawyer Princess Abante.
Summarzing the House's concerns on the impeachment case ruling, Abante said the high court might have "inadvertently rewritten the rules of impeachment". The Office of the Secretary General (OSG) represents the House before the SC.
Rep. Marcos went on to say that the focus should be on country.
"Let's not dwell on that, I think now is the time to focus, again, on the state of the nation," he said.
"I think his SONA is one that is in touch with the realities that we live in," the majority leader noted.
