GOSSIP GIRL: Martin Nievera gives a touching message to Johnny Litton
Martin Nievera and Giselle Sanchez
As someone who’s had the honor of hosting the Johnny Awards, named after Johnny Litton, for the third year in a row, I can honestly say that this year was a fabulous challenge because I had to make the creme de la creme awardees laugh at my stand-up comedy jokes. And these were not just ordinary individuals; the awardees comprised an incredible roster of individuals whose impact spans law, business, the arts, and humanitarian work.
From Justice Conchita Carpio-Morales to Jacques Branellec of Jewelmer, every name called was a reminder of the depth of Filipino excellence. Chairperson Marissa Fenton and co-chair Roselle Rebano led the ceremonies with poise and passion—ladies who make things happen with grace (and gowns to match!) Held last July 20 at the Grand Hyatt Manila, the evening affair was a glorious mix of elegance, excellence, and a whole lot of heart.
Let’s start with the showstopper: Martin Nievera. Yes, the Concert King opened the event with a rousing medley of his hits, laced with delightful anecdotes only Martin could pull off. But it didn’t end there. This year, Martin was also honored with a Johnny Award for the arts—a well-deserved recognition for his decades-long career that has serenaded and inspired Filipinos all over the world. When Martin took centerstage to receive the award, I was particularly touched with his speech directed personally to Johnny Litton himself, “Johnny really with all jokes aside I will cherish our friendship forever And i thank you for all the years of experience that you have shared with people just like myself, the artists whose careers you have started and those you have believed in like this artist holding this palm tree award right now. Thank you so much for the friendship.”

What a great tribute speech for the 90-year-old Johnny — the ultimate host, mentor, and icon of Philippine society events. Though he couldn’t be there in person, his presence was felt through every speech, every toast, and yes, even through the gorgeous custom cake crafted in his honor (thank you, Richard Chu!).
Now let’s talk about the food—because my column is never complete without it! Grand Hyatt Manila truly delivered a culinary experience fit for emperors and empresses (literally—there was an Emperor and Empress of the Night!). Hyatt owner Mr. Hans Hauri ensured that the food would be spectacular - from the elegant waiters’ parade serving Oriental-inspired appetizers to the savory creations of Chef Berg Chen.
A personal highlight? Hosting the auction for the benefit of Lyropera, a nonprofit nurturing young opera talent. Guests bid generously on masterworks by Noel Bueza, Eduardo Castrillo, and Ramon Orlina. Not to be outdone was the stunning ruby necklace from Radha Jewelry—modeled to perfection and auctioned with flair.

To close the show, we raised a glass — literally! — with a toast led by Marissa and Roselle, and I got to switch from host and stand-up comedienne to singer. The night concluded with style awards, laughter, and numerous camera flashes.
As I looked around the ballroom, filled with changemakers, creatives, and kindred spirits, I realized: the Johnny Awards isn’t just a celebration—it’s a reminder that legacy, love, and laughter will always be in fashion.
And hosting it? That is always my honorable service to the great Johnny.
