  • The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) aims to finish the demolition of the Tangos-Tanza Navigational Gate in Navotas City by August 8.
  • The decades-old structure, originally built to control tidal surges from Manila Bay, was found to be structurally compromised.
  • Demolition is underway to pave the way for a modern, climate-resilient floodgate and improved flood control facilities.
  • The floodgate, located between Barangays Tangos North and Tanza, regulates water flow between Navotas and Malabon.
  • DPWH assured the public that temporary flood mitigation measures are in place during the demolition phase.

Clearing operations for the decades-old Tangos-Tanza Navigational Gate in Navotas City are scheduled to be completed by August 8, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said.
DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan  said they are expediting the demolition to restore unimpeded water flow and support flood mitigation efforts.
Bonoan said the work will proceed without delay despite weather disturbances, emphasizing that the structure’s removal is critical to protecting low-lying communities in Navotas and nearby areas.
The navigational gate, located between Barangays Tangos North and Tanza, was initially built to regulate tidal surges from Manila Bay but has since been deemed unserviceable and a contributor to inland flooding.
The demolition is part of the Metro Manila Flood Management Project, which aims to rehabilitate outdated flood-control systems and reopen natural waterways.
Bonoan said the site will be prepared for the construction of a modern, climate-resilient floodgate targeted for completion by 2026.
Navotas, where more than half of the land area lies below sea level, remains among Metro Manila’s most flood-prone areas, highlighting the urgency of infrastructure upgrades to reduce disaster risks.
