Cavite 4th district Rep. Francis "Kiko" Barzaga, the self-proclaimed "congressmeow", has been given an important role in the 20th Congress.
Barzaga was among the handful of House members who were named assistant majority leaders during plenary session Tuesday afternoon, July 29.
No less than Majority Leader Ilocos Norte 1st district Rep. Sandro Marcos elected Barzaga to the position. Assistant majority leaders automatically become members of the powerful House Committee on Rules, which determines what happens during plenary sessions.
Barzaga, 26, a neophyte lawmaker, is known for his inordinate fondness for cats. A quick look at his social media will confirm this.
On Monday afternoon while Barzaga was walking at the north wing lobby toward the House plenary hall to attend President Marcos' fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA), he waved to the crowd and said, "Meow!"
Meanwhile, three members of the "House Hotshots" were also elected as assistant majority leaders on Tuesday.
These are FPJ Panday Bayanihan Party-list Rep. Brian Poe, 33; Batangas 6th district Rep. Ryan Recto, 29; and Negros Occidental 3rd district Rep. Javier Miguel "Javi" Benitez, 30.
The Hotshots are the new youth clique in the 20th Congress.
