Bicol Saro Party-list Rep. Terry Ridon is hoping that the Supreme Court (SC) would still be able to rethink its controversial decision on Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment complaint, which it has deemed unconstitutional.
As such, Ridon underscored the importance of the House’s planned motion for reconsideration (MR) on the high court's ruling.
"Very important ho yung paninindigan ng Kongreso na magkakaroon po ng motion for reconsideration (Congress' stance on the filing of a motion for reconsideration is very important)," Ridon said in a chance interview with reporters Sunday afternoon, July 27.
"At hopefully magkakaroon pa ng pagkakataon ang Korte Suprema na pag-isipan pong muli ito pong real, grave implications nito pong kanilang bagong doktrina sa pag-iimpeach po, particularly yung impeachment initiation," said the lawyer-congressman.
(And hopefully, the Supreme Court will still have the opportunity to think again about the real, grave implications of their new doctrine on impeachment, particularly the impeachment initiation.)
Ridon was referring to the assertion of the House, through its spokesperson, lawyer Princess Abante, that the SC might have "inadvertently rewritten the rules of impeachment", and made it "very stringent".
Abante said these apparent revisions to the rules not only complicate the impeachment process but also encroach on the exclusive powers of the House. Only the legislature, not the judiciary, can amend the Constitution.
"So hopefully pagka ho naipasa po ng Kongreso ang kanila pong motion for reconsideration, we will wait no kung ano ho yung kanila pong talagang pinaka-pinal na pagtingin at desisyon po sa usaping ito.
(So hopefully, once Congress passes their motion for reconsideration, we will wait for the SC's true, final view and decision will be on this matter.)
