The death toll due to the combined effects of Tropical Cyclones “Crising”, “Dante”, “Emong” and the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat) was lowered by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) to 31 from 32 on Monday, July 28.
A report from the NDRRMC showed the number of fatalities in Central Luzon (Region 3) decreased by one, from three to two.
The NDRRMC has yet to provide an explanation behind the reduced death toll but in previous similar scenarios, the Council would only revise the figures after verifying that some reported fatalities were unrelated to the weather disturbance or due to duplicate entries in their records.
The National Capital Region (NCR) recorded the highest number of deaths with nine fatalities. The region experienced severe flooding, and strong winds and heavy rains caused numerous trees and debris to be uprooted.
Meanwhile, six deaths were logged in Western Visayas (Region 6), five in Calabarzon (Region 4A), three apiece in Negros Island Region (NIR) and Northern Mindanao (Region 10), and one each in Mimaropa (Region 4B), Davao (Region 11), and Caraga (Region 13).
Seven persons were still missing while 17 others were reported injured.
The number of people affected by the four weather disturbances increased to 6.2 million. More than 122,000 individuals remained in evacuation centers as their homes were either destroyed or flooded.
The damage to infrastructure has now reached P6.5 billion, with significant damage reported in Ilocos (Region 1), Cagayan Valley (Region 2), Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Region 3, 4A, 4B, 6, NIR and 10.
On the other hand, the estimated cost of damage to agriculture has totaled P510 million. A total of 19,000 hectares of crop area were affected in Regions 1, 2, CAR, 3, 4A, 4B, Bicol (Region 5), 6, NIR, Zamboanga Peninsula (Region 9), and Soccsksargen (Region 12).
