FPI hails Marcos' SONA as 'reassuring first step' on urgent national concerns

The Federation of Philippine Industries (FPI) said President Marcos’ focus on key national issues—such as infrastructure, public health, flooding, and food security—during his recent State of the Nation Address (SONA) was a reassuring first step toward addressing the most urgent challenges of the Filipino people.
In a statement penned by FPI Chairperson Elizabeth Lee, the umbrella organization representing domestic manufacturers and producers said they had hoped the chief executive would address a broader range of pressing issues.
Nonetheless, the FPI said the SONA was “well delivered,” as its focus on the country’s core issues spoke directly to the “everyday fears and hopes” of Filipinos.
“Addressing them strengthens his goal for a more resilient citizenry and workforce that is key to businesses,” said Lee.
The FPI described Marcos’ fourth SONA as his administration’s firm commitment to inclusive growth, rural development, and industrial revitalization.
The group particularly expressed its support for the president’s call to further strengthen the public infrastructure system, with facilities that are completed on time and built to last.
Arguably, the highlight of Marcos’ speech was his call to crack down on corruption linked to flood control projects, where he alleged government officials and private contractors of committing schemes such as kickbacks to steal government funds.
Marcos has directed government agencies to compile a list of projects completed or not, over the past three years, for public scrutiny.
“Transparency and accountability are key—especially in light of the directive to audit and publish all flood control projects and expose erring contractors,” said Lee.
In terms of health, the FPI commended Marcos’ move to upgrade the benefits available from the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) and the rollout of zero-balance billing in government hospitals
The industry group likewise backed the president’s commitment to reject any budget item not aligned with government priorities.
“Fiscal discipline and policy alignment are crucial for delivering meaningful, long-term impact,” said Lee.
The FPI also welcomed Marcos’ firm stance against economic sabotage in the agriculture sector, which the group says is vital to ensuring stable prices and protecting both producers and consumers.
“FPI remains a committed partner in building a stronger, more competitive industrial economy, anchored on innovation, accountability, and inclusive progress,” Lee added.
