Christian Gian Karlo Arca and Jemaicah Mendoza ruled their respective age brackets to hand the Philippines a pair of gold medals in the standard event of the 9th Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championships in Zhuhai, China last Monday, July 28.
Arca slammed Chinese Song Yihang to top the premier open Under-18 while Mendoza overwhelmed Myanmar’s Amaratti Min to reign supreme in the girls’ U14 section.
Both woodpushers finished undefeated with Arca, a standout of Panabo, Davao del Norte, scoring seven points on six victories and two draws while Mendoza, who is from Dasmarinas, finished with 8.5 points on eight triumphs and a split.
Arca and Mendoza hope add more medals as they were competing in the ongoing blitz and rapid competitions of this weeklong meet.
Adding a bronze to the country’s bounty was Ruelle Canino in the premier girls’ U18 category.
The World Cup and Olympiad veteran bested fellow Woman FIDE Master Eunice Feng of Hong Kong to finish third with seven points.
Mongolian Bayarsaikhan Khulan took the gold with eight points while Vietnamese Ton Nu Quynh Duong won the silver with 7.5 points.
