Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara on Monday, July 28, lauded President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA), calling it a powerful and clear message that zeroes in on the needs of ordinary Filipinos—particularly in the field of education.
"I didn’t think the President could top last year’s SONA. But somehow, he has," Angara said after the address. “Simpleng lingwahe at simpleng mensahe—na tutok sa pangangailangan ng karaniwang Pilipino (Simple language and message—focused on the needs of the ordinary Filipino),” he added.
Angara expressed particular appreciation for the President’s special focus on education reforms, teacher welfare, and the rollout of a new college scholarship program aimed at helping students from low-income families.
"Nakakatuwa ang pagbigay ng kakaibang atensyon sa isyung pang-edukasyon—sa kaginhawaan ng ating mga guro at estudyante (It's heartening to see such distinctive attention given to education issues—especially when it brings comfort to our teachers and students),” Angara said.
In his 2025 SONA, the President emphasized the administration’s commitment to education by announcing expanded college scholarship programs for deserving students.
He said the government will increase funding for state universities and colleges (SUCs) and provide more financial aid and support to underprivileged youth—aiming to make higher education more accessible and inclusive.
“Paniguradong marami ang maiaangat sa kahirapan ng bagong scholarship program ng Pangulo sa kolehiyo (The President’s new college scholarship program is sure to lift many out of poverty),” Angara said.
DepEd, now in its second year under Angara’s leadership, has pushed for reforms to make the education system more inclusive, responsive, and focused on quality learning outcomes.
For Angara, the new scholarship program is seen as a key component of this broader vision.
