Torre-Baste charity boxing match generates over P15 M cash for calamity victims

The charity boxing match between Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III and acting Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte has so far generated P15 million cashg donation as of Saturday night, July 26.
In an interview during his arrival at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum on Sunday, July 27, Torre said the cash donation is on top of the goods and other basic commodities that the PNP received as a show of support for the charity boxing match.
“As of last night, we were able to generate P15 million cash. There were also goods like canned products, sacks of rice and other relief goods. These will all be given to our kababayn affected by the calamity,” said Torre.
“I was also surprised with the flow of support. But I am thankful to our kababayan who responded to our call because this event, this charity boxing match, is really for entertainment because of what happened in the days,” he added, referring to the widespread flooding and other calamities that happened in the past days in Metro Manila and other parts of the country.
It was Baste who brought up a possible a fistfight with Torre in one of his podcasts wherein he hurled invectives against the Chief PNP.
The public, however, was surprised after Torre accepted the challenge but emphasized the need to turn it into a charity boxing match as a way of helping those affected by the weather disturbances.
Aside from cash and goods donations, the tickets being sold will also be used to help those affected by the calamity.
As of 10 a.m. on Sunday, the coliseum was almost full—with a lot of people still in queue outside.
“Those who arrived today are paying sponsors, paying donors. I really thank them for their support,” said Torre.
Among those who arrived were Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla, National Police Commission (Napolcom) Vice Chariman and Executive Officer Rapahelm Calinisan and some top officials of the PNP.
There were four undercard fights, all of the boxers came from the PNP boxing team, before the main event.
It is not immediately clear if Baste will show up.  He had left for Singapore on Friday for an "official business trip" with his family and other government officials.
