The PCUP is the primary government agency tasked with promoting the interests and welfare of the urban poor, particularly in matters involving housing, basic services, and participatory governance.
It serves as a direct link between marginalized urban communities and the government to ensure their voices are heard in policymaking and development programs.
In a social media post following her oath-taking, Gonzales thanked the President for his confidence in her.
“As I took my oath as Chairperson of the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor, I am reminded to trust God’s plan and wholeheartedly accept the mission entrusted to me,” she wrote on Facebook.
“I pray to serve well and honor the trust given by our President—always with the hope of bringing dignity and a brighter future to our poor brothers and sisters,” she added.
Gonzales served as councilor of Taguig City’s second district from 2010 to 2016.
She is also the mother of National Youth Commission (NYC) Commissioner-at-Large Michelle Mae Gonzales, who was appointed to the NYC in August 2024.
