UY
CEBU CITY – Describing it as evil, incoming Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy has called for a total ban on online gambling.
In a statement released on Friday, July 25, Uy urged President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and lawmakers to permanently ban online gambling in the country, saying “it robs people of time, dignity, and peace.”
“Let me speak plainly: Online gambling is evil. It feeds on the vulnerable," the 58-year-old prelate said.
Allowing the operation of online gambling will destroy lives, break families, and prey on the poor, he added.
Uy pointed out that online gambling is not just a legal or financial issue but also moral and spiritual crisis that cannot be fixed by just regulating it.
The outgoing Tagbilaran bishop added that online gambling is often disguised as entertainment but can actually lead to addiction, debt, despair, and even suicide.
Uy opposed suggestions that regulation instead of total ban will do good for the country because of the revenues that it brings in.
He said regulation will not address the root problem and cannot undo the harm already done.
“We beg you: Please put a total and permanent ban on online gambling in the country. Do not allow this poison to continue spreading into the homes, phones, and hearts of our people,” Uy said.
Uy urged the public to reject gambling. He appealed for support for individuals struggling with addiction.
