Local government units (LGUs) must act with urgency in improving their respective disaster preparedness and response measures in the face of worsened typhoons and floods.
Thus, said Senior Citizens Party-list Rep. Rodolfo “Ompong” Ordanes as he cited the impact of climate change and the growing struggles of families—especially those caring for senior citizens—during calamities.
Ordanes emphasized that climate change fuels increasingly unpredictable and extreme weather events such as stronger typhoons, sudden flash floods and landslides that heavily affect the lives of many Filipinos
“We are now in an era where climate change makes weather conditions more erratic and destructive and while we do have preparations during times like this, it is only appropriate to explore other measures that would help us to cope better in the future,” he said in a statement.
He also mentioned the need to support the most vulnerable members of the society, as well as families with elderly members who may have special transport and medical needs.
He says that whenever there’s a disaster, these individuals are at a greater risk because of their specificim needs.
The Senior Citizen Party-list representative urged LGUs to take a more proactive stance by reviewing and updating their disaster risk reduction and management plans and factor in the needs of senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and other vulnerable groups.
In addition, he asked LGUs to consider elderly-friendly evacuation centers, medical kits for chronic illnesses, and early warning systems that consider mobility and access issues faced by senior citizens.
