SHFC moratorium offers aid to storm-ravaged homeowners

State-run Social Housing Finance Corp. (SHFC) has imposed a one-month moratorium or temporary suspension of principal payments due to the severe impact of Severe Tropical Storm (STS) Cruising and excessive rainfall.
In a statement on Friday, July 25, SHFC estimated more than 148,000 families will benefit from the moratorium. These families are those whose homes and livelihoods were extremely affected by the typhoon and the southwest monsoon, also known as habagat.
In particular, the housing lending firm sees that the one-month moratorium “will provide financial relief to families from over 2,100 communities in areas hit by the recent weather disturbances.” As such, monetary resources allocated for housing loan payments may be redirected toward basic needs and immediate recovery efforts.
According to the SHFC, Metro Manila, with around 70,000 member-beneficiaries (MBs), is among the most affected areas. Other affected communities include Quezon Province, with nearly 12,000 MBs, and Cavite, with around 11,000 MBs.
Other severely affected areas include Bulacan, Pampanga, Rizal, Laguna, Occidental and Oriental Mindoro, Batangas, Sorsogon, Iloilo, and Palawan, among others.
SHFC President and CEO Federico Laxa stated that the payment suspension is part of the agency’s efforts to support communities affected by disasters.
“The agency has mobilized its regional offices to closely monitor the situation on the ground, ensuring that timely assistance reaches the most affected areas,” Laxa added.
As per SHFC, the declaration of a one-month moratorium aligns with the President’s order “to provide swift assistance to families affected by the recent calamities.”
Affected member-beneficiaries are advised to coordinate with their account officers or visit the nearest SHFC office for more details regarding the payment easing.
