(UPDATED)
It turns out Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Police General Nicolas Torre III was not joking when he accepted the challenge of Davao City Acting Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte to a boxing match.
Torre jogged around the PNP oval at Camp Crame in Quezon City amid heavy rain on Friday morning, July 25, as part of his preparations for the slugfest, which he proposed to be a charity event for the victims of recent typhoon “Crising” and southwest monsoon “habagat”.
“Around 6:20 a.m. Friday, PNP Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III jogged around the PNP oval in the middle of the rain as he jogged 10 rounds and part of his preparation for Sunday’s charity boxing match,” PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo told reporters.
Fajardo said that it was part of Torre’s routine to jog around the PNP oval, whether it rains or it shines, before he goes on with his daily schedule as the country’s top cop.
A boxing ring was also set up at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila for the event.
However, the boxing match, supposed to be scheduled on Sunday, July 27, is now uncertain due to the conditions set by Duterte.
He demanded that before the boxing match could proceed, all elected officials, including President Marcos Jr., should first undergo a hair follicle drug test.
This has been a long-time demand by the Duterte camp and its supporters after accusing the President of using illegal drugs, an allegation that has been repeatedly denied by Marcos.
The Marcos-Duterte beef could be traced back to the souring of political relations between the President and Vice President Sara Duterte, the sister of Baste, which initially began as a powerful alliance under the “UniTeam” banner during the 2022 elections.
The tension led to an investigation of the VP’s alleged anomalous spending of confidential and intelligence funds, and later on, her impeachment over life-threatening remarks against the First Family and House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
The friction further worsened when the Duterte patriarch, former president Rodrigo Duterte, was arrested following an enforcement of an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant in cooperation with the PNP on March 11.
