Pampanga 2nd district Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo set the record straight on Friday, July 25 and said that she won't vie for House Speakership in the current 20th Congress.
“Former President and now Congresswoman Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is not running for speaker and has signed the Lakas-CMD manifesto of support," her staff said in a message to House reporters.
Arroyo's office gave the statement three days before the House of Representatives' scheduled session on Monday, July 28--the first in the 20th Congress.
Being their first session in a new Congress, House members are expected to elect their Speaker on their day. However, Arroyo says she wont be contender.
The manifesto signed by Arroyo is in support of Leyte 1st district Rep. Martin Romualdez's continued Speakership. Reports said that the manifesto already has 291 signatures from various congressmen.
Romualdez, Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) president, served as Speaker during the previous 19th Congress.
His party-mate Arroyo held the top post in the House during the tail end of the 17th Congress.
