Amid ongoing impact of Severe Tropical Storm “Emong” and the lingering effects of earlier storms, all water service disconnection activities for non-payment have been temporarily suspended by the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS).
MWSS Chief Regulator Patrick Ty said on Friday, July 25, that pausing disconnections aims to prioritize public health during the onslaught of the typhoon season.
MWSS’ directive prohibits Manila Water Co. and Maynilad Water Services, Inc. from disconnecting any customers during the 15-day period.
“This directive does not cover disconnection cases involving water service tampering, violations of Republic Act No. 8041 (Water Crisis Act), or other unlawful activities,” Ty clarified.
He added, “At this critical time, when access to clean, safe, and reliable water is essential to protecting public health, the MWSS-RO has likewise instructed the Concessionaires to ensure water supply availability for all customers.”
Meanwhile, parts of Northern Luzon are experiencing partial power interruptions due to damaged transmission lines and affected electric cooperatives (ECs).
As of 9 a.m. Friday, July 25, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) reported five downed transmission lines affecting three ECs: Central Pangasinan Electric Cooperative, Inc. (CENPELCO), La Union Electric Cooperative (LUELCO), and Pangasinan I Electric Cooperative, Inc. (PANELCO).
The unavailable transmission facilities include the 69 kilovolt (kV) Labrador-Bolinao line, the 69 kV Bauang-San Fabian line, the Bauang-Naguilian line, the Bauang-San Fernando line, and the Bacnotan-Bulala line.
“There is one 230 kV line unavailable,” NGCP stated, assuring residents that inspection and line restoration works are underway.
NGCP also clarified, “Please note that loss of power may be caused by affected transmission facilities of NGCP or distribution facilities of local distribution utilities or electric cooperatives. Specific cities and municipalities affected by the power interruptions are determined by concerned Distribution Utilities, unless the outage affects the entire franchise area.”
The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has yet to provide an update on affected customers within its franchise area, which includes Metro Manila, Bulacan, and Cavite.
