For Iloilo 1st district Rep. Janette Garin, United States (US) President Donald Trump's glowing words about President Marcos and his administration bodes well for the Philippines--a relatively small country in the global arena.
"Coming from a power country (US), that speaks very highly of our country. Remember, maliit ang Pilipinas ikumpara sa ibang bansa sa buong mundo (the Philippines is a small nation compared to the rest of the world)," Garin said in a virtual press conference Thursday, July 24.
President Marcos had just come back home from a visit to the US that included a fruitful meeting with Trump that delved into trade agreements and military cooperation between Manila and Washington.
Most notably, the American leader praised Marcos as a “highly respected” and “tough negotiator".
"The mere recognition of the current administration is a big symbol, kasi kasama nung recognition na yan yung pagbukas ng pintuan nila (because this recognition comes with the opening of their door to us)," Garin said.
"Syempre, dahil maliit tayo, kailangan natin ng big brothers. So kaakibat ng statement na yun ay ang respeto at pagbukas ng pintuan ng America para sa nga kailangan ng Pilipinas (Of course, because we’re a small country, we need big brothers. So, tied to that statement is the respect and America’s willingness to open its doors to what the Philippines needs)," she explained.
Aside from giving President Marcos his flowers, the outspoken Trump also criticized the previous administration in the Philippines for supposedly "not getting along with anybody" and "not knowing what they were doing".
Trump didn't mention what previous administration in the Philippines he was referring to.
