BACOLOD CITY – Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson paid his last respects to overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Leah Mosquera, a native of San Enrique town, whose remains arrived in the province on Thursday, July 24.
Lacson joined the grieving family and friends of Mosquera as her remains arrived at the Bacolod-Silay Airport in Silay City on Thursday morning.
They were accompanied by Department of Migrant Workers (DMW)-Negros Island Region (NIR) Director Glenda Aligonza, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA)-6 (Western Visayas) Director James Mendiola, and Provincial Public Employment Service Office (PESO) Head Karen Dinsay.
Mosquera, a 49-year-old Filipina caregiver, was killed in a missile attack in Rehovot, Israel on June 15, where she had been working for nearly 20 years.
According to her sibling, Mosquera opted to rest that day and stayed in their apartment, along with other OFWs, when the attack happened. She passed away in a hospital on July 13 after being comatose for about a month.
Lacson pledged financial assistance to Mosquera’s family once the money is ready. “We were there to pay our last respects. She is an OFW who sacrificed her time away from home to bring a better living for her family,” he added.
He said that Mosquera was one of the millions of OFWs in the country who contributed greatly to the economy.
The governor said that Mosquera’s friend who is also based in Israel and from Pontevedra, Negros Occidental, is planning to go home to rest and get away from the trauma she experienced.
He said that her friend lives nearby but was not with Mosquera when the attack happened. She sustained injuries but survived.
San Enrique Mayor Jilson Tubillara said that he has talked to Mosquera’s siblings and assured them of assistance. He said that he has a monitoring team that coordinates with the family.
Tubillara said that her family has yet to discuss the date of interment and the wake at their home.
Mosquera served as barangay treasurer in Barangay Guintorilan, San Enrique before working abroad alongside her sister.
She is the second OFW from the province killed in the ongoing conflict. The first was 49-year-old Loreta Alacre from Barangay Cadiz Viejo, Cadiz City in 2023.
